The DECF newsletter is published at least once every semester.  These
mailings will highlight major system upgrades, changes, and
announcements.  The newsletter is sent to all DECF users.  You may
receive multiple emails if you have several different accounts with
DECF.  Instructions to unsubscribe are at end of email.

1.  Notes & Reminders.

New email server:
    Please remember that maxwell.berkeley.edu is the new mail server.
    POP and IMAP users should make the switch to maxwell as soon as
    possible.  Response time on maxwell.berkeley.edu, especially for
    newton POP users, will be faster.  Please note, you CANNOT login
    to the new server.  

telnet/rsh/rlogin/rexec phased out on newton.
     telnet/rsh/rlogin/rcp will be gradually phased out on
     newton.berkeley.edu.  On the "Date" specified,
     telnet/rlogin/rsh/rcp logins will only be allowed from hosts in
     the "Allowed domains".

     Date           Allowed domains. 
     3/1/01         only .berkeley.edu hosts. 
     4/1/01         only ieor.berkeley.edu, ce.berkeley.edu, 
                    me.berkeley.edu, nuc.berkeley.edu hosts 
     7/1/01         disabled permanently. 

     You can replace telnet/rlogin/rsh/rcp with ssh.  For instructions on how 
     to convert to SSH, how to download SSH, how to replace rlogin/rsh     
     commands, go to:

    Users without a SSH client can use WebSSH until it is installed.         
    WebSSH is an SSH client that will run in a web browser.  WebSSH is
    available at http://webssh.decf.berkeley.edu

2. New & upgraded software on decf.berkeley.edu

The following software is now available.

    + ampl Student Version - PC cluster
    + elm 2.5.5 upgraded from 2.5.2 - newton.berkeley.edu
    + gnuplot - 5101 & 1171 Solaris workstations.
    + Mathematica 4.1 (1 license) - PC cluster and Solaris Workstations
    + Maple 7.0 - Solaris workstations
    + Scale 4.4 - Solaris workstations

New PC's:
    Two new PC's (933Mhz & 1 GHz with 256 MB RAM) have been added to
    5101 Etch.  It has the same software as the other PC's.  The new
    PC's have a 250MB Zip Drive for you to save your data.  You will
    need to provide your own zip disk.  

New Printer:
    An HP 4100 printer has been added to 5101 Etch lab.  It supports
    duplex and legal size printing.

WebMail:
    Just like Yahoo or Hotmail, you can now access your email through
    a web browser!  Info about WebMail is available at:

4. DECF Info & How to Un-Subscribe

What is DECF?  DECF provides computing to the 4 departments of ME,
IEOR, CE, and NE.  This includes email service, class and general
compute service, web service, ftp service, finger, IP name service,
overall network security, and other computing-related needs common to
the labs and departments.  DECF also aids to resolve network-related
problems.
