Welcome to your new DECF Open Lab account. An Open Lab account gives you access to the machines newton, decf, and all of decf's client workstations in the 1111 Etcheverry lab. You also get access to the DECF Windows NT cluster. Below you will find important information you need to know.

Help:

See the online help files or visit staff office hours. The UNIX commands help, man and apropos are useful on the Sun workstations; Windows NT has its own help files also.

Disk Quotas:

Disk quotas exist on newton, decf, and the shared Windows NT home directories. This means that like your gas gauge in your car, you should watch it occasionally. The exact amount of disk space alloted to you depends on what type of account you signed up for on the application form. Larger accounts incur a $25 charge. On UNIX, type help quota for more information, and type quota for a quota report. See the quota help files for more information.

Screen locks on workstations in DECF labs (1101 and 1171):

Screen locks may not be used to lock a workstation longer than 5 minutes. Anyone needing to use a locked workstation should send mail to consult@newton.berkeley.edu

Power Off:

You are not allowed to turn the power off at the NT and Sun Workstations. As you may have noticed, the sticker on the power button is meant to prevent users from pushing it. Please do not pierce through the sticker. Anyone violating this rule will be put on a user-blacklist and may be subject to account cancellation.

Printing:

You may use the printers in 1101 for instructional-related use. The 600 dpi HP printer takes regular xerox paper. Fill it yourself, and do not take the paper for any other purposes except than printing on this printer. Large jobs should be printed on your lab's printer. Abusers of these guidelines may lose their accounts.

Printer paper in DECF labs:

Printer paper is paid for by DECF for printing in DECF labs only. Taking paper for outside use is prohibited. Please don't take the paper, or we may have to cancel your account.

Your email:

See the MAIL section in DECF HELP.

Your webpage:

See the WEB section in DECF HELP.

Your password:

Guard this and follow the password guidelines given to you. If the facility breaks your password, and you do not change it within a week, your account will be temporarily taken offline. To change your password, log into DECF, and type passwd. Your password will be changed immediately on DECF, and by the next morning on all the client computers. See the PASSWORD section in DECF HELP.

Common Sense in 1101 and 1171:

No food, no drinks, no pornographic screen displays.

Large files:

If you have a mail-only account, you may find yourself running over disk quota. The Windows NT 4.0 cluster in 5101 has Iomega Zip drives capable of soring 100MB of files. To purchase these Zip diskettes which cost approximately $12 each, visit the ASUC Student Store. Simply use the Windows NT WS_FTP program to download from your newton account to the Zip disk.

Account Renewal:

Open Lab Accounts should be renewed every semester for general users.
