1. System downtime

Over winter break, we will be performing several system upgrades and
maintenance. Services will be unavailable during this time.

Please note that they will be no support staff on duty between 12/22/03 -
1/5/04. But we will try to reply to inquiries sent to consult@newton.

5101 Etch/decf.berkeley.edu:
    Between 12/19/03 - 1/16/03, 5101 Etcheverry will be unavailable
for installation of new Linux workstations. Students can still
access the W2K cluster. DO NOT run any computational jobs on the
server decf.berkeley.edu or the clients. They will be killed.

Papers for printers in 5101 Etch will not be filled.

maxwell.berkeley.edu/relay server/virus scanner:
The mail server will be unavailable 12/21/03, 1/3/03, 1/4/04,
    1/10/04, 1/11/04, 1/17/03, 1/18/03 for system maintenance, between
6AM-12PM. Actual downtime will be minimal, if at all. But we're
leaving a 6 hour window just in case.

All email service, including Webmail, virus scanning for research
labs will be affected. All emails will be saved and delivered when the
    systems come back up.

file.decf.berkeley.edu/kepler
The file server will be unavailable for a quick reboot on
1/4/04, 1/11/04, between 9AM-12PM. Actual downtime should be
15-20 minutes. But we're leaving a 3 hour window just in case.

kepler and 5101 Etch linux clusters will be unavailable during
this time, as well as personal webpages.

1171 Etch / helium.berkeley.edu
The 1171 Etch server will be unavailable 1/5/04 - 1/16/04 for
    system maintenance.

2. System additions & changes

New Linux cluster in 5101 Etch
Over winter break, we will be replacing the Sun workstations in
5101 Etch with new Linux workstations.

The workstation is a Pentium 4, 3.06GHz workstation with 512MB
RAM, 250MB Zip drive, CD-RW, and Flat Panel Monitor. The
workstations will offer many programs similar to the ones found on
    our W2K cluster.

New scanner
The scanner in 5101 Etch has been replaced with a new scanner
which has OCR capabilities and much better software integration.

Maple9 installed
One Maple 9 license has been installed on DECF servers. It is
accessible from any DECF servers and lab computers.

PGI installed
DECF has bought a 2-seat, 16 CPU PGI compiler for use on the linux
cluster. For more info on PGI, please see
    http://www.decf.berkeley.edu/help/apps/pgi/

New PCs donated from Sun
During spring semester, we will be adding a new compute cluster
from Sun. They can be used for parallel computing or large
compuation jobs. The clients will be 2x2.8GHZ PCs with 2GB RAM.
The server will have 2x3.06GHz PCs with 2 GB RAM. Faculty or
students interested in using this cluster for research, please
    contact consult@newton.berkeley.edu

3. DECF Info & How to Un-Subscribe

The DECF newsletter is published at least once every semester. These
mailings will highlight major system upgrades, changes, and
announcements. The newsletter is sent to all DECF users. You may
receive multiple emails if you have several different accounts with
DECF. Instructions to unsubscribe are at end of email.

What is DECF? DECF provides computing services to the departments of
ME, IEOR, CE, NE, MSE, and BioE. This includes email service, class
and general compute service, web service, finger, IP name service,
overall network security, and other computing-related needs common to
