The DECF newsletter is published at least once every semester.  These
mailings will highlight major system upgrades, changes, and
announcements.  The newsletter is sent to all DECF users.  You may
receive multiple emails if you have several different accounts with
DECF.  Instructions to unsubscribe are at end of email.

1.  Notes & Reminders.
Changing passwords:
    Change your passwords by login into passwd.decf.berkeley.edu
    Passwords will be propagated to all our Unix machines w/in 15
    minutes.

Vacation/Forward settings:
    If you're unfamiliar w/ Unix systems, you can change email online
    by using WebMail.  Log into WebMail
    (http://webmail.decf.berkeley.edu), click on Options->DECF Account
    Utilities ->Set Up Mail Forwarding or Vacation Message

Newton retirement.
    We're slowly retiring newton.berkeley.edu.  Passwords aren't
    propagated to newton.berkeley.edu and no new accounts are being
    made there.  Programs such as pine/ftp/netscape have been disabled
    on newton.  Note that your email address DOES NOT CHANGE.  But
    there is now a new login server: kepler.berkeley.edu, for you to
    check email and run computational jobs.  For more information, go

Reading newsgroups with Pine
   tin and rn have been replaced by Pine for reading newsgroups.  
   If you have trouble setting it up, go to:

2. Summary of Upgrades/New Services
deceuler.berkeley.edu retired.
    deceuler.berkeley.edu was retired on 7/1/02.  

Duplex printing on kepler.berkeley.edu
    You can now print to the duplex printer in 5101 Etch on kepler.
    Just type "lpr -Pduplex filename"

5101 Etch Lab upgrade
    6 Sun Ultra 10's in 5101 Etch were replaced this summer with a
    newer model, with more disk space and 256 MB RAM.  There is now a
    total of 10 new Ultra 10's in the lab.

Mail spool not mounted on decf.berkeley.edu
    Users using 5101 Etch workstations or logging into
    decf.berkeley.edu must now use IMAP aware clients to read
    email. (pine, netscape)

Upgraded web servers 
    This summer, all ME related websites were migrated to a new and
    faster server.  The webserver will support MySQL and PHP web
    pages.  Email consult@newton.berkeley.edu if you want to use MySQL
    or have problems w/ your CGI script because of the move.

Increased disk quota and disk space
    Quotas for new student accounts have been increased.  For more

    Students not using POP for email also had their quota increased.
    
Sign up for email account on-line
    Spread the word!  Incoming ME/IEOR grad students can now sign up
    for their accounts online.  They must have a student ID and be in
    our database.  For more information, go to
    http://www.decf.berkeley.edu

Building name server upgrade.
    The building name server (for ME, IEOR, NUC) domains, was moved to
    a faster machine.  

Anonymous FTP disabled
    Anonymous ftp to ftp.me.berkeley.edu is no longer available as of
    8/1/02.  If you need to set up anonymous ftp, email
    consult@newton.berkeley.edu

3. DECF Info & How to Un-Subscribe

What is DECF?  DECF provides computing to the 4 departments of ME,
IEOR, CE, and NE.  This includes email service, class and general
compute service, web service, ftp service, finger, IP name service,
overall network security, and other computing-related needs common to
the labs and departments.  DECF also aids to resolve network-related
problems.
