1. Notes & Reminders.

New email server:
Please remember that maxwell.berkeley.edu is the new mail server.
POP and IMAP users should make the switch to maxwell as soon as
possible. Response time on maxwell.berkeley.edu, especially for
newton POP users, will be faster.

telnet/rsh/rlogin/rexec phased out on newton.
To improve security on newton, telnet/rsh/rlogin/rcp will be
gradually phased out on newton.berkeley.edu. On the "Date" specified,
telnet/rlogin/rsh/rcp logins will only be allowed from hosts in the
     "Allowed domains".

     Date Allowed domains.
     --------------------------------
     1/1/02 .edu domains.
     3/1/02 only .berkeley.edu hosts.
     4/1/02 only ieor.berkeley.edu, ce.berkeley.edu,
                    me.berkeley.edu, nuc.berkeley.edu hosts
     7/1/02 disabled permanently.

You can replace telnet/rlogin/rsh/rcp with ssh. For instructions on how
to convert to SSH, how to download SSH, how to replace rlogin/rsh
     commands, go to:
     http://www.decf.berkeley.edu/help/security/ssh/index.html

Users without a SSH client can use WebSSH until it is installed.
WebSSH is an SSH client that will run in a web browser. For information
on WebSSH, see item #3 below.

IMAP Info Session
Is Pine on newton too slow for you? Wished you could have access
to your mail folders from different computers? Use IMAP to
retrieve your email! There will be an info session on how to use
     IMAP tomorrow, 11/28/01 from 11AM - 12 PM in 1171 Etcheverry. We
will talk about what IMAP is and how you can use it for your
     email needs.

2. New & upgraded software on decf.berkeley.edu

New PC:
A new PC (933MHz PIII with 256MB RAM) has been added to the Windows PC
cluster. It will have the same software as the other PC's.
In addition, the new PC offers a 250MB Zip Drive and CD-RW for you to
save your data. You will need to provide your own zip disk.

New Sun workstations:
Four new Sun workstations are being added to the 5101 Sun Cluster
(for a total of 18). They are: jive, quickstep, bolero, balboa.

3. System upgrades & changes

Virus scanner installed:
A rudimentary virus scanner has been installed on maxwell, our
mail server. All incoming mail (e.g., mail sent to DECF users)
will be scanned. Any attachments with "suspicious" extensions
such as .bat, .hlp, .lnk, .dll, etc will be returned to the
    sender.

WebSSH:
Ever need to telnet to newton while you're traveling? Try WebSSH!
WebSSH is a java applet which will allow you to login to our
system through a supported browser. Once you log into webssh, you
HAVE TO ssh to newton in order to use pine.

    Try it at: http://webssh.decf.berkeley.edu
	         http://webssh.me.berkeley.edu
