Kepler down for upgrade Saturday, 4/12/08 10pm-3am

Update: 4/12/08 10:40PM
kepler upgrade is completed. Mathematica is currently not working. matlab
is upgraded to version 2007b.

Dear DECF User You're receiving this email as our records indicate that you logged into kepler within the last 4 months or use kepler as your license server. On Saturday, 4/12/2008, between the hours of 10PM-3AM, kepler.berkeley.edu will be upgraded to a new server. The new server is a Xeon quad-core 4GB machine. We anticipate that the upgrade will make x-window displays (via ssh) must faster. We still encourage you to run your jobs on our Linux client clusters instead of kepler. In the future, kepler may become a head node for our parallel computing clusters. During the upgrade, kepler may be rebooted several times. You may be able to log into the server during this period, only to be booted out when we reboot. So we recommend that you do not login at all during this time. Ideally, the actual downtime will be about 10 minutes as we reboot the server. However, if we run into problems, we may take the server down longer to fix the problem. Worst case scenario, we will revert back to original kepler and schedule the upgrade for another day. 3 services will be affected during the outtage: kepler.berkeley.edu webssh.decf.berkeley.edu (allows you to SSH into kepler using a Java applet) license.decf.berkeley.edu (license server for Abaqus, patran, comsol, adina, matlab, PGI, mathematica, maple, ampl) WHAT WILL CHANGE ---------------- The OS for the server will be upgraded from Redhat 3 to Redhat 4. So many software will be upgraded. We will NO LONGER MOUNT the mail server on kepler. All mail access will now need to go through IMAP. kepler defaults to IMAP access if you check email through pine. If you think this will pose a problem with your mail access, please email consult@newton.berkeley.edu. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO -------------------- As always with any server upgrades, there are unforeseen problems no matter how much testing we do before hand. This may be especially the case with kepler, which is a login server and has a few more specialized software installed than our other servers. If you encounter any problem w/ software not working, or are unable to check out licenses for software, please send an email to consult@newton.berkeley.edu. thanks nancy
