Dear users

You're receiving this email because you've logged into
webssh.decf.berkeley.edu or decf.berkeley.edu within the past few months.
decf.berkeley.edu will be retired on 4/30/05. All services provided by
this server will be migrated to other servers before the end of the month.
You should notice no difference in service. webssh.decf.berkeley.edu will
be moved to a new server.

On 5/1, the server will be unaccessible to users.

If you have files you've saved on the server, please migrate them off
before the end of the month. The files on this server is seperate from
the files that are saved on either the mail server (maxwell.berkeley.edu)
or the file server (used by 1171 & 1111 client machines).

If you have any questions, please email consult@newton.berkeley.edu

08/26/04 As you know, on Sunday, the file server went down. It took a whole day to
get it back up. Yesterday, Wednesday, 3 of the file servers disks died.
We use a RAID5 system in case 1 disk dies. But w/ 3 disks, we had to
restore from back up yet again. Unfortuantely, in the dash to get the
file server completely back up, no backup was made between Monday and
Wednesday. So your files are only as recent as Sunday morning between
9:30AM and 11:30AM.

I need to be taking the file server down over the next two days to try to
recover the original RAID array. The tentative schedule is as follows:

Thursday after 8PM
Friday after 10PM
Saturday/Sunday 8AM - 2PM
  • 08/25/04 Three disks on the file server died this morning. I'm working on restoring from backup right now.

  • 08/22/04 The file server is still down due to a problem with adding new disks. I'm still working on restoring the files. I'm trying to get it up by Monday morning. This affects kepler and all Linux work stations, as well as individual homepages.
  • 08/22/04 Last night, between around 9:30 PM and 8:30AM this morning, the root partition of the mail server filled up. As a result, mail sent during this period was bounced back to the user with a User Unknown message. Usually when this happens, the user will try to send the email again. But I'll be going through the mail logs today and sending you an email with the email of the user who sent you the message as well as the subject.
  • 09/02/03:The mail virus scanner server had swap space problems this afternoon and was refusing email from around 1:30 PM till 7PM tonight. Our backup mail server did kick in and queued all the messages that were refused. I'm in the process of redelivering all the email. You should also be receiving some "cannot deliver mail for last 3/4 hours" type of message. Please ignore those as we're re-delivering now. Sorry for the inconvience. I guess it's time to move up the schedule for adding a second virus scanner server......
  • 08/21/03: SOBIG virus is now stopped at the mail server level. You will not be receiving cleaned email messages.
  • 08/13/03:
This weekend, we will be adding a new
file server. To minimize downtime, we will be migrating
files over two days. The following services will be
unavailable Saturday, 8/16/2003, 6AM-10AM and Sunday,
8/17/2003, 6AM-10AM. Actual downtime will be 1-2 hours
while we move the files over. But we're leaving a larger
window just in case. During this time, the following service
    will be unavailable:

    1. Logins to kepler.berkeley.edu
    2. All web services

Email service will still be available, except for WebMail.

    What this means
    ---------------

    1. The mail server will now be seperate from the file server.
Users will now get two seperate quotas: a mail quota and a
Home quota. For more information on the new quota scheme,
    please check http://www.decf.berkeley.edu/help/quota/

Users will probably see an increase in their mail and disk
quotas as a result of this move.

    2. We will eventually consolidate all DECF home directories
into one file server for each access. No more SFTPing between
    home directories.

Due to budget cuts, as well as the consolidation of our
file servers, disk quota policies will probably be revised
sometime during this year. We will send out notices before
we implement the new policy. However, existing PAID disk spaces
    will not be affected.
