Using Typewriter Terminals with Nroff
Here is a checklist of operating procedures for the IPSI 1622 and
DTC 300, 300/S, 302, and 382 typewriter terminals. This document
will also be of some help to those using similar DASI, Diablo,
and Xerox models.
Assemble Gear
Print wheels (Pica, Elite, APL, etc.) and cloth or carbon ribbons
can be purchased at the Customer Service window in the basement
of Evans Hall (Room B4). You will need Hytype II ribbon for all
machines except the DTC 300 and 300/S terminals, which require
Hytype I ribbon.
Load Paper
Load the paper almost as if you were using a normal typewriter.
If you are using the continuous pin-fed paper, be sure to release
the friction-feed rollers with the lever on the right rear of the
cover and make sure that the paper does not feed at an angle.
Folding together the first two pages to reinforce the holes may
make loading easier. If you are using standard size typing pa-
per, engage the friction-feed rollers with the lever on the right
rear of the cover. Choose some point of reference so that you
can position each sheet of paper in the same way.
Mount Print Wheel and Ribbon Cartridge
With the POWER OFF, push the print wheel firmly onto the print
head axle and ease the whole print head assembly away from you
until it stops near the platen. Wind the ribbon taut and snap on
the cartridge between the plastic tabs. The DTC 300 and 300/S
terminals have a latch to lock the print head in place and rubber
rollers to secure the cartridge in position.
Set Switches
Set the switches according to the table below, which is appropri-
ate for the current UNIX system. Switches are located beneath
the cover or next to the keyboard. Note that different models
may have different kinds of switches. In the table below, the
switches which have a plus sign + are found only on the DTC 382
and IPSI 1622; those with an asterisk * are found only on the
DTC 382. Also note that there is no PLOT switch on the
IPSI 1622.
Switch Setting | Switch Setting
-----------------------------------------------------------
AUTO LF OFF | FORM(LENGTH)+ 11
RATE(SPEED) 30 (300) | SCROLL+ OFF
PITCH(SPACING) 10 for pica | LPI* 6 for pica
12 for elite | 8 for elite
PARITY any | WHEEL* STD
DUPLEX FULL | PRNTR* ON
PLOT ON | LINE2* OFF
Set Left Margin
Close the cover and turn the power on. Put the terminal into lo-
cal mode by pressing in the LOCAL key or by pressing the
LOCAL/LINE button. Space over to the desired position for the
left margin and then press and release the ESC key. Now type the
character 9 unless you have a DTC terminal, in which case type 0
(zero). The left margin is now set.
Connect to UNIX
Put the terminal in line mode: on an IPSI 1622 terminal, set the
LOCAL key in the up position; on a DTC 382 press the CONV key;
and on the other DTC models press the LOCAL/LINE button. To con-
nect to UNIX by phone, dial one of the system numbers and wait
for a high-pitched tone. Then, if you have a modem, place the
phone handset in to the modem. If you have a Dataphone, press
the DATA button and hang up. Press the carriage return; the ter-
minal should print a login banner. If you are using a hardwired
terminal, simply press the carriage return to have a login banner
printed.
What if the terminal does not function normally?
Press the RUB or DEL key or turn the power off. If the fault
lamp lights up, push the RESET button. In case you do not know
what went wrong and want to try again, recheck the switch set-
tings and the exact wording of your command. Whenever you change
the PLOT switch setting, you must press RESET (or CLEAR on non-
DTC terminals) before the change in the plot setting will take
effect. Note that after turning the power off or pressing RESET
(or CLEAR), you will have to reset the left margin.
