Help Files: Quotas: Exceeding Your Mail Quota

Home > Help Files > Quota > Mail Quota

COMMON SIGNS:

So how do you know you have exceeded your mail quota or hard limit? Common signs are that you are no longer receiving email, and you remember getting some type of warning that you were over quota. To check, run the "quota" command on kepler and look at the line that begins with "maxwell". To understand what these numbers mean, go to http://www.decf.berkeley.edu/help/quota/general.html.

WHAT TO DO:

If you have exceeded your mail hard limit, you will be unable to receive email, and if you have exceeded your soft quota, you are in danger of
the same happening. You have two alternatives:

  1. Delete the mail. Run your mail reader (pine, elm, mail, Eudora, Netscape, etc), and delete messages from your inbox that you have already read, are not interested in, etc. If you are using a POP mail reader, such as Eudora or Netscape, there are some important details you need to be aware of. See below.
  2. Move the mail. If your mail reader gives you an option of saving a message, such as the bsd mail or pine "s" command, you can use this to remove messages from your inbox and move them to saved message files in your home directory. NOTE! This simply shuffles your quota usage around. You are now using home directory quota space. See the general quota file for more information on this, and other useful items such as how to compress your mail files so they don't take up as much room.
  3. If you're a pop user and you want your email to stay on the server, move to using IMAP. IMAP allows you to have multiple mail folders, thus lowering your INBOX disk usage. See IMAP Instructions.

HOW TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN:

Unless you are staff or faculty, you have a default quota of 100MB(soft) and 150MB(hard). This can fill up fast, so check mail often. If you still feel your needs exceed this quota, apply for a quota upgrade ($9/100MB, upgrade here). DON'T subscribe to mailing lists! These can quickly fill up your inbox

POP CLIENT TROUBLES:

If you use a POP client to read your euler mail, such as Netscape or Eudora, you need to be aware that, if set up wrong, even after you have
read your incoming mail, it can stay in your inbox (something you DON'T want) To make sure this doesn't happen, do the following:

  • Netscape
F rom the "Options" menu, select "Mail and News Preferences..."
A window will pop up with 5 different "folder tabs" along the top. Click on the one marked "Servers" Where it says "After Delivery" midway down the page, click the button next to "Remove from server".
  • Eudora
From the "Tools" menu, select "Options..."
A window will pop up with a row of icons on the left. Select "Incoming Mail" Look at the right side of the screen, and make sure the "Leave mail on server" option is NOT checked.
