Netscape Cache

PREFACE:

Anything in double quotes is either a file name or a UNIX command. In either case, the quotes are for clarity. You do not type the quotes when typing the command, and the quotes will not actually appear in the file name.

THE PROBLEM:

Mail-only users especially will run into trouble from Netscape creating huge cache directories in their newton home directory, where they have little disk quota available. The culprit is usually the ".netscape" directory which you can see if you type "ls -a ~" on newton (without the ""s). The reason it doesn't usually show up is that any file or folder that begins with a "." doesn't appear under a normal "ls". These netscape directories frequently use upwards of 2MB of diskspace.

HOW TO SOLVE THE IMMEDIATE PROBLEM:

First you need to remove that .netscape directory which is causing all manner of quota problems. First, make sure you are in your home directory (on newton type "cd" and hit return) Then on newton type "rm -rf .netscape" and hit return. Make sure you type it exactly as it appears, as otherwise you could possibly delete important files.

HOW TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN:

In order to reduce your cache size (or how much junk netscape will stick in your home directory) for good, do the following. Note: after doing this you _will_ have a new .netscape directory, but don't delete it! It should no longer grow to an unruly size after you do the following:

  1. Open Netscape. (type "netscape" and hit return)
  2. Go the the "Options" menu at the top and pull down "Network Preferences..."
  3. You should see a series of "folder tabs" along the top of the window that appears, one of which is labeled "Cache" Click on that one.
  4. In the box to the right of "Disk Cache", highlight the number "5000" (or whatever is there), and type "0"
  5. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the window.
  6. Go back up to the "Options" menu and choose the last item "Save Options"
  7. Quit Netscape (optional)
