Note: POP-SSL is not available to new user accounts after 1/1/03. POP-SSL will not work with Eudora 6.0.1.
Please Note: POP makes a copy of your mailbox whenever you check mail. This means that it can be VERY SLOW when you have a large mailbox. Your mailbox also becomes corrupt easily. If you must keep all your mail on the server, we highly recommend that you convert to IMAP. IMAP will only download the mail headers until you need to read the entire message; thus speeding up the download time. See Eudora IMAP-SSL for more information.
- Make sure you're running Eudora 5.2.1. POP-SSL will not work with Eudora 6.0.1. To find out what version of Eudora you're running, click on About Eudora from the Help menu
- From the Tools menu, select Personalities. You'll see a list of "personalities" in the left window pane.
- Right click on <Dominant> personality. Select Properties Each personality represents one email account from which you check mail. If you've configured your DECF account under another personality name, select that one instead.
- Under Generic Properties, make sure the following is set: Real Name: your-real-name (e.g., Arthur Dent) Return Address: your-DECF-username@newton.berkeley.edu (e.g., adent@newton.berkeley.edu, user@ce.berkeley.edu, user@nuc.berkeley.edu, etc) Login Name: your-DECF-username (e.g., adent) SMTP Server: - If you are on campus, using campus HIP/SHIP, set as relay.decf.berkeley.edu Authentication Allowed: CHECKED Secure Socket When Sending: If Available, STARTTLS
- Click on the Incoming Mail tab, fill in the following: Server: maxwell.berkeley.edu Configuration: POP Leave Mail on Server: Uncheck (Please use IMAP if you leave mail on server.) Delete from server when emptied from trash: Check (If you must leave mail on server.) Authentication Style: Passwords Secure Socket When Receiving: Required, alternate Port
- Click OK
- Check mail. Enter your DECF password when prompted. This will fail because you need to add maxwell's server certificate to Eudora. Note: This is not the same as your APOP password. If you don't remember your DECF password, go see a lab staff during their office hours.
- To add the server certificate, right click on <Dominant> and select Properties.
- Click on Incoming Mail.
- Click on Last SSL Info.
- Click on Certificate Information manager at the bottom of the page.
- Click on Add to Trusted.
- Click Done
- Click OK
- Click OK again.
- Now you can check mail again.
- To view your list of mailboxes, select Mailboxes from the Tools menu. You will see your mailboxes on the left of the screen.
