Mail Setup Instructions: Eudora

Back to Mail Setup Instructions

Eudora 5.2.1 or above with POP-SSL (Macintosh)

Note: POP-SSL will not work with Eudora 6.0+ on Mac OS 10.3. POP-SSL is not available to new users after 1/1/03.

  1. You must be running Mac OS 9 or above. Note: POP-SSL will not work with Mac OS 10.3.
  2. Make sure you have KeyChains enabled. Keychains allow you to store all your passwords or certificates in one place. This is where maxwell.berkeley.edu's certificate and your Eudora password will be stored. To enable KeyChains, go to Apple -> Control Panel -> Keychain Access. If a keychain doesn't already exist, you are asked to create a new one. You will need to lock your keychains with a password. Be sure to choose one that is different from your DECF password. When your keychains are unlocked, any user on your computer can open applications using the passwords on your keychain. For security, you should always lock your keychain when you are not at your computer.
  3. Make sure you're running Eudora 5.2.1 or above. To find out what version of Eudora you're running, choose About Eudora from the Apple menu.
  4. From the Window menu, click on Personalities. The Personalities window will be opened.
  5. Highlight <Dominant>. Click Edit button. The Settings window opens with Personalities (in the left pane) highlighted. Each personality represents one email account from which you check mail. If you have configured your DECF account under anotherpersonality name, select that one instead.
  6. In the Settings window, make sure the following is set: Username: your-DECF-username (e.g., adent) Mail Server: maxwell.berkeley.edu Check for mail every: 10 minutes (recommended, minimum 5 min) Check mail on manual checks: Check if you want to manually check mail instead. Real Name: your-real-name (e.g., Arthur Dent) SMTP Server: - If you are on campus, using campus HIP/SHIP, or DECF modem pool, set as maxwell.berkeley.edu. - If you are using AOL, Earthlink, Pacbell, AtHome, or other ISP's set as your-isp-mail-server. (e.g., mail.pacbell.com) - If you are off campus and want to use Outgoing Mail Relay, set as relay.decf.berkeley.edu. (see Outgoing Mail Relay for more info.) Return Address: your-DECF-username@newton.berkeley.edu (e.g., adent@newton.berkeley.edu)
  7. Click on Personality Extras icon in the left pane, fill in the following: Mail Protocol: POP Authentication: Passwords Leave Mail on Server: Uncheck (Please use IMAP if you leave mail on server.)
  8. Click on SSL icon in the left pane, fill in the following: SSL for POP: Required (Alternate Port) SSL for SMTP: None SSL for IMAP: leave as is.
  9. Scroll up the left pane and click on Miscellaneous icon. Make sure "Use system keychain to store passwords" is CHECKED.
  10. Click OK
  11. Check mail, enter your DECF password when prompted. Note: This is not the same as your APOP password. If you don't remember your DECF password, go see a lab staff during their Office Hours.
  12. A "Unknown SSL Certificate" window will pop up. To add this certificate to your keychain, click Open.
  13. Check Add to KeyChain. Select Always Trust in the pull down menu. Click OK . Click Done
  14. Now you can check mail again.
Please Note: POP makes a copy of your mailbox whenever you check mail. This means that it can be VERY SLOW when you have a large mailbox. Your mailbox also becomes corrupt easily. If you must keep all your mail on the server, we highly recommend that you convert to IMAP. IMAP will only download the mail headers until you need to read the entire message; thus speeding up the download time. See Eudora IMAP-SSL for more information.
