Saving Messages in Pine

If you want to save an email that someone has sent to you so that you can easily reply to them later, the best way to do this in Pine is not to leave the message in your INBOX. If you do this, the message will take up valuable room in your /var (mailspool) quota, and after a while, your quota will fill up and you will not be able to receive any new mail. (For more information about mail and home directory quotas, read the quota help pages.

Instead, while viewing the message, type 's' (the letter s) whereupon Pine will ask you "SAVE to folder [saved-messages] : " If you press return now, Pine will save your message into a "mailbox file" named saved-messages. If you wish to organize the messages you save, you can always enter a different name (e.g. "mail-from-bob"). When you do this, the message will be marked as deleted from your INBOX (so when you quit Pine it will be out of your mailspool and /var quota) and it will be stored in that "mailbox file" in your home directory.

The next question, of course, is how do you bring those saved messages back up. To do this, go back to the main menu (type 'm'), and then go to the folder list menu (type 'l') You should now see a list of mailboxes, like INBOX, sent-mail, and saved-message. Use the arrow keys to select "saved-messages" (or whatever you named the mailbox, such as "mail-from-bob"), and hit return. You can now browse all of those messages, reply to them, forward them, and delete them if you wish, just as if they were in your INBOX. When you are done, type 'ml' to go back to the folder list, and select INBOX to once again view a list of incoming messages.
